Francisco Ferrari
Apart from being one of the most enthusiastic bladesmiths of our country, Mr. Ferrari is also a seargent in a cavalry division of the Brazilian Army. Being a part time maker, Ferrari developed such a passion for the craft it is most ispiring for all of us. Some words from him:

I have started to contact the world of cutlery some 20 years ago when I went fishing and hunting with my father and grandfather. I used to take the handles off my father's hunting knives and replace them for new wooden ones. With time I started to make the blades and harden them, using as prime materials car springs and files.
In 2000 I put a small shop together in my home where I could improve my technique and start new experiments. I am still working as a part time smith.

In 2002 I have meet Mastersmith Jerry Fisk, who came to Brazil to teach a seminar. I was influenced by his techniques, and by other bladesmiths such as Ricardo Vilar, who is always helping me. As I was born in the countryside of the São Paulo State I bring to my work a certain dose of nostalgia as well as the influences of the field knives used on the region where I live now, the Mato Grosso do Sul State.

I got interested into forging, being that the method I use today. The steels I use the most are 5160, 1095, O1 and 52100, as well as Damascus. For handles I favor brazilian hardwoods, but I also use other and also horns, bones and micarta. I try to show in my work, before all, functionability  and confort, qualities I judge essential to a good blade, and a good finish of the whole.
